TRAVERSE CITY, Michigan: June 24, 2017—Foreword Reviews, a media company focusing on independently published books, announced the winners of its INDIES Book of the Year Awards today during the American Library Association’s Annual Conference in Chicago. “Awarding the INDIES is always the highlight of our year, when we get to honor talented authors and great books that are ordinarily overlooked by mainstream publications,” said Howard Lovy, Foreword Reviews’ executive editor. “While they don’t have major PR machine or corporate budgets, these indie publishers are passionate about what they do, take chances, and produce a wide range of thought-provoking books.”
Over 2,000 entries were submitted 66 categories, with Foreword’s editors choosing the finalists, and a panel of over 150 librarians and booksellers acting as judges to pick the winners.
Foreword editors also selected Editor’s Choice winners in fiction and nonfiction, naming Lois Lenski: Storycatcher, by Bobbie Malone and published by University of Oklahoma Press in nonfiction; and We Love You, Charlie Freeman, by Kaitlyn Greeidge and published by Algonquin Books in fiction.
Restless Books was named Foreword’s publisher of the year. “In today’s political climate, we thought immediately of Restless Books, with its focus on immigrant voices, for our publisher of the year,” said Lovy. “From its prize for new immigrant authors to translating and importing wonderful genres like Cuban science fiction, Restless Books embodies the best of the indie spirit this year.”
