IndieVoices Podcast: Riptide Publisher Rachel Haimowitz Talks LGBTQ Books

Rachel Haimowitz
Rachel Haimowitz publisher of Riptide Publishing, which specializes in LGBTQ fiction, recently wrote a commentary for Foreword Reviews that said:

“We’re on a mission to get these stories into the hands of straight people. To show the world that LGBTQ folks are no different than anyone else. … Which is why we also publish stories about queer space pirates and queer zombie hunters and queer detectives.”

If that is so, then why have a special genre at all? I asked her if maybe it isn’t time to get rid of a special LGBTQ category, and simply place them on the shelves with their traditional genre. Her answer was, basically, “Yes and no.”

In this excerpt from our IndieVoices podcast, Rachel and I discuss LGBTQ publishing, categories, and surviving deep in the heart of a red state.
