"In the Fall They Leave" has to do with a young student of nursing in occupied Belgium during World War I who must choose between upholding her oath and helping her instructor, a character based on the acclaimed British nurse Edith Cavell, and so risk death by firing squad, or obey the laws of the occupiers by turning in hidden Allied soldiers. This suspenseful novel set mainly in Brussels during WWI, dramatizes the risks and rewards of moral courage.
