During the Battle of Shiloh two boys fall—Stanley Mitchell, a Yankee, and Aaron Matthews, a Rebel. Aaron's mother searches in vain for her son, but finds seriously wounded Stanley instead. The Yankee boy forces Mrs. Matthews to make a desperate choice. She agrees to take Stanley into her home, and she promises to try to save his life, if only he will tell her where she might find Aaron.
