TRAVERSE CITY, Michigan: June 15, 2023—Foreword Reviews announced the winners of its INDIES Book of the Year Awards today. For this year’s competition, over 2,600 entries were submitted in 55 categories, with Foreword’s editors choosing approximately 10 finalists per genre. Those finalists were then delivered to individual librarians and booksellers tasked with picking the Gold, Silver, Bronze, and Honorable Mention winners.

“What a monumental and exciting effort the judging process was this year,” says Matt Sutherland, Foreword’s Executive Editor. “So many worthy titles, so thin the margins between medal winners and finalists.”

Foreword editors also selected Editor’s Choice winners in nonfiction and fiction. Grey Bees, a Deep Vellum title by Andrey Kurkov, was named the fiction honoree; and Woman, Watching—by Merilyn Simonds, ECW Press—was honored as the winner in nonfiction.

Levine Querido was named the INDIES’s Publisher of the Year. Founded just four years ago by publishing veteran Arthur Levine, “Levine Querido has already cemented its status as a beloved publisher of multicultural books for young readers. Indeed, its titles garnered 42 starred reviews from the trade in 2022 alone,” says Editor in Chief Michelle Schingler. “Having expanded into publishing adult books just this year, Levine Querido remains committed to highlighting ‘diverse, powerful, unique voices and visions from the multitude of cultures.’”
