2023 Publisher of the Year

CamCat Books is a mere five years old, but you wouldn’t know it from the significant impact they’ve already had on independent publishing. Their books are awards show darlings thanks to their mix of exciting storylines, dynamic authors, and impeccable packaging—the sort of titles that catch eyes on bookstore and library shelves before they captivate readers’ imaginations. The CamCat team knows their literature, and their variety of PhD, BA, and MFA accreditations, in addition to their decades of experience in publishing, proves it. They publish the kinds of genre gems that you know they love to read. This year, they suffered an incalculable loss with the death of their visionary founder, Sue Arroyo—an entrepreneur whose love of great stories called her to open CamCat, named after her beloved daughters. Her absence is felt everywhere. The company she founded still boasts a growing roster and a dedicated readership—a mere part of her considerable legacy, and one that we’ll all cherish for years and years to come.
