How the Oceans Came to Be

A Traditional Lumbee Story

An origin story from the Lumbee people is recounted through paint-on-canvas illustrations. Once, North America rested on the back of a giant snapping turtle; the turtle had several hatchlings, one of which grew to be rather large itself. This Great Snapping Turtle makes its home at the mouth of the mother spring, selfishly blocking the water from the plants and animals that depend on it. A brave rabbit faces down the turtle, relying on his ingenuity to release water back into the world.
