HERO, WE KNOW
That once, you put your head in an oven.
How you picture clouds to fall asleep.
Why you stole gum once from a 7-11.
That when you were just sixteen, you crept
out of your window, down Maple Street
and Vine, into that brown station wagon.
That time you vomited everything you ate
on your date’s lap. How we laughed along
with your deadpan, your can-can, your
antics in the attic. How we boo-hooed to see
you slip past our gaze like a gray vapor,
arriving safely, deftly, stolen away
from our jingles and laugh tracks on cue,
from our Velcro hearts, our black and blue.
