Is It Asleep?
Simple, to-the-point language brings the abstract topics of death, grieving, and carrying on into focus for children in this comforting picture book. Squirrel and his friend Pock, a mushroom, go in search of their favorite bird; they find it on a forest path, still and silent. They are joined by their mouse friend, Gunther, who insists nothing that looks and sounds so beautiful could be dead. In the end, they give the blackbird the best tribute they can—and another bird takes up its song.
