Mutual interests give way to an unlikely alliance between a powerful wielder and the imminent Male Alpha of Velm in Capes’s beautiful, romantic fantasy novel West of Jaws.

Although The War Years ended centuries ago, wielders and wolves remain wary of each other. However, a personal vendetta and a longing for truth and redemption propel Helisent West of Jaws, a powerful wielder, to work with Samson 714 Afador, the imminent Male Alpha of Velm. They embark on a mission that will either improve or destroy the fragile balance of the world they know. Their tentative union is eyed with suspicion by some; others praise it, longing for the fulfillment of the Northing, a plan for peace and cooperation between all races. Long buried and twisted secrets shake the already fragile partnership as the duo maneuvers ever-rising obstacles and proceeds with skepticism brought on by the massacre and betrayal of The War Years.

This mission takes the duo into a colorful and unfamiliar world mixed with festivals, ghosts, and waricons. They meet a diverse array of characters from among the four scents/races who have varying classifications and abilities. These characters include nymphs, wielders, wolves, and selkies, with subsets like Okeanids, Hesperides, numbered wolves, unnumbered wolves, red witches, and gold witches with a varying number of horns depending on their strength.

After traveling together for months, the twosome’s growing attraction and sexual tension becomes harder to ignore. They contend with their feelings in the face of the widely accepted cultures and norms which hold the fragile peace and dictate how the races interact. The book works toward an inconclusive ending, leaving many questions for book two to address.

West of Jaws is an engaging, emotive fantasy tale in which two souls try to find themselves and make sense of their world.
